GHUNGROOS / FEET BELLS for Kathak and Bharatnatyam

In Indian dancing so-called Ghungrus are worn, mostly around the ankles, in order to intensify acoustically the rhythmic movements of the feet. Ghungrus consist of a different number of little bells made from bronze or brass. As they hardly resonate, they represent precisely the rhythmic movements of the dancing feet. The number of bells per foot can vary from 6 to 200.These Ghungroos are not so much a nice looking accessory in combination with the dress, they are an important factor to increase the rhythmical percussion sound which is produced by the foot work. The more bells a pair of Ghungroos has the better the percussion sound will be. Also the quality of the bells is very important. The common professional Ghungroos which dancers use in Kathak should be at least 100 bells each feet. 2 x 50 bells are not enough to get the percussion result a Dancer wants, only for Children it will be OK. In Bharatnatyam we offer a professional pair of 50 bells each feet, this is enough for Bharatnatyam, but the bells should be of very good quality.

Especially the classical Indian dance Kathak has a big rhythmical part. A lot of very expressiv foot work is inlcuded in this technical part and the right Ghungroos are an additional percussion instrument to make the foot work even more expressiv. For practise and for performance a pair of Ghungroos with 100 bells each foot are highly recommended. The sound of this Ghungroos together with the typical clapping sound of the Kathak dancers feets on the floor will produce a authentic sound of Kthak dance.

As every Kathak student knows very well it is not easy to achive the nice clapping sound of the foot on the dance floor which looks so easy when the teacher is doing it. to develope this sound it needs mostly years of regular practise of the student. During that time the student has to do the foot work very boldly to develope this sound befor ehe is able to achive the same result with less efforts. In India Kathak students often use very heavy Ghungroos with 200 bells each foot to put more weight on their feets and so get faster development in this typical sound of Kathak foot work. due to this TARANG also offers this heavy Ghungroo set for the practise of Kathak students.

Also for Bharatnatyam Ghungroos are not so much a nice looking accessory in combination with the dress, they are an important factor to increase the rhythmical percussion sound which is produced by the foot work. Thats because TARANG and the Indian teachers of TARANG school recommend only a professional pair of typical Bharatnatyam Ghungroos which have good quality bells for best sound production. Diese ist mit einem stabilen und haltbaren Klettverschluss ausgestattet. Die beiden Enden der auf dem Samtbett aufgebrachten Glöckchen werden so variabel in der Größe am Fußgelenk verschlossen. Ein Ende verfügt über 2 Laschen die nahtlos umgeklappt werden ( siehe Bild 3) und so zusätzlichen Halt geben.
